In the UK we celebrated Mothering Sunday, which is also popularly known as Mother’s Day, on the 14th of March. On this special day, sons and daughters show their mothers how much they appreciate them.
They buy flowers for their mothers, take them out to dinner (before Covid-19), give them lovely greeting cards, or do something special for them. As wonderful as it is to have this special day to celebrate our mums, we should not have to wait for Mother’s Day to show our mothers how much we love them. We should always show our mothers how thankful we are for them for the following reasons.
Mum is the one who gave birth to us.
For nine months she carried us in her womb. She endured the frequent morning sickness, the dramatic increase in weight, the constant back pain, and her swollen feet. She made a lot of sacrifices to have a child in her life. She may have had to give up her dream job, change her career, drop out of college, and put aside her future goals. Whether it was planned or unplanned, mum chose to have us as part of her life and for that reason, we should be very thankful.
Mum is the one who takes care of us.
Who do we run to when we scrape our knees from falling off our bikes or when we get into a fight with a kid from school? Who is the first person we call when we feel unwell? We call our mothers. Mum is the one who treats our wounds, ensures that we stay clean and healthy, and takes care of us when we get sick. She is the one who comforts us when we get hurt and protects us when we feel scared.
Mum is the one who always believes in us.
From basketball games to school plays, our mums are usually there for us when we need them. She’s the one who cheers the loudest for us in the audience and gives us a hug if we lose a game. Mum is the one who helps us with our homework, study for a test, and always encourages us to do our best. She goes above and beyond to provide us with the tools we need to succeed.
Not all mothers are perfect. We may not always get along with them. But if it wasn’t for our mothers, we would not be here today. So let’s not wait until Mother’s Day to show our mums how much we appreciate them. Instead let us take some time out of our busy schedule to give them a call, spend time with them (as soon as the government says it’s okay), and let them know that we haven’t forgotten about all the things they did for us.
